| Woming Jeka. Welcome. |
| Tjanabi means “to have a joyous occasion” or “to celebrate” in the traditional language of the Boon Wurrung people of Melbourne. Here, we celebrate the old and the new – embracing contemporary architecture and vibe of the city, while cherishing the secrets and traditions of our ancestors.
Hospitality was integral to the lifestyle of Melbourne's first people, revolving around wholesome food, good company and warm surroundings. At Tjanabi, we live through the welcoming spirit of its Idigenous heritage, and extend it to our guests. As a descendant of the traditional land owners of Melbourne, Founder Carolyn Briggs has spent her life proudly sharing her indigenous heritage with foreigners and Australians alike. In the 5 years since its opening, Tjanabi has evolved from a restaurant to a cultural destination. Carolyn has infused the menus with her personal knowledge and experience of native Australian cuisine. In keeping with the ancient gathering ways, the culinary offerings change seasonally, using food that’s at its prime and accenting it with intrinsic spices found only in the Southern Hemisphere. Tjanabi’s vision is to reconnect with the land by promoting awareness of the linked nature of the Earth and its species. We strive to understand and appreciate our relationship with the world, and the influence of indigenous populations on our modern lives. At Tjanabi, we take responsibility for knowing exactly the path our food has taken, and minimizing waste, to run a sustainable establishment. We will give back to the earth that feeds us by supporting local produce, art and communities and promoting a holistic, eco-conscious attitude. Most importantly, we will continue to extend a heartfelt Womin Jeka, on behalf of the Boon Wurrung people, to all who come through our doors. |
